Practice
My practice has developed over many years and continues to evolve. Although music sits at its heart, the work itself extends across composition, performance, community music, research and cultural leadership, with each informing the others in different ways. Rather than existing as separate strands, they’ve gradually become woven together, each shaping the questions I ask and the work that follows.
I rarely begin with a fixed idea of what a project should become. More often, the process begins by spending time in a place, listening to the people who know it best, understanding its history, noticing its character and allowing those experiences to shape the work.. Sometimes that process results in a composition or performance, sometimes it becomes a research project, a long-term collaboration or a community-led programme. Each project develops in its own way, shaped by the people, the place and the conversations that emerge along the way.
Over the years my work has taken me into concert halls, community centres, schools, universities, galleries, forests, coastlines and village halls. I’ve worked with professional musicians, children and young people, choirs, artists, researchers, volunteers, local authorities and community organisations, and every collaboration has taught me something different. The scale and context may change, but I’m always interested in work that grows from careful listening and responds thoughtfully to the people and places involved.
I’m at my happiest working in the borderlands between artistic practice and research, analogue synthesisers and unaccompanied voices, composing alone and making music collectively. It’s where I find the richest conversations, the most interesting questions and, more often than not, the beginnings of a new piece of work.
Music
Composition, performance and recording have been constants throughout my life. My work spans electronic music, sound art, collaborative composition and place-based performance, exploring the ways sound can deepen our relationship with people and place.
Community
For more than two decades I’ve worked alongside communities, creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to make music together. Whether working in schools, village halls, arts centres or unexpected outdoor spaces, I’m interested in creating environments where creativity, curiosity and shared ownership can flourish.
Research
My research grows directly from my artistic practice. Through my practice-led PhD and wider writing, I explore co-creation, community music, place, identity and belonging, asking how creative practice can deepen our understanding of the world around us.
Speaking, Presenting, Workshops & Teaching
I regularly speak, teach and facilitate for universities, conferences, cultural organisations and community settings, sharing ideas around community music, place-based practice, co-creation, cultural leadership and creativity.
Collaboration
Some of the most rewarding work I’ve been part of has begun with a conversation. I enjoy collaborating across disciplines, bringing together artists, organisations, researchers and communities to develop new ideas, commissions and creative projects.
